Latin America never ceases to surprise us with the diversity of food products it produces and exports.

During one of our trips through rural Paraguay, we came across communities harvesting oranges—not for their juice or fresh fruit, but for their peels. The peels are carefully dried and exported all the way to Germany.

My first question was: What are orange peels used for? The answer: tea.

In most agricultural operations, men typically lead the work in the fields because it often requires heavy machinery. What makes this export supply chain unique, however, is the role of women. Much of the harvesting and peel selection is done by hand, and women play a leading role throughout this process.
